The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never have come to an end They are new every morning New every morning Great is Thy faithfulness, O Lord Great is Thy faithfulness

These words, drawn from Lamentations 3:22–23, have become a familiar refrain in our songs of worship. In Psalms 33, the psalmist also says that we can make worship Him with gladness (vv. 1–3) because of the steadfast love of the Lord! We can make new songs with different instruments and sing for joy all because of His steadfast love.

We sing about it, we talk about it, but what does it mean that God's love is steadfast? In the original Hebrew, the word used to describe this steadfast love is “hesed”. It is a rich and deeply theological word. It refers to God’s covenantal love: a love that is unwavering, enduring, loyal, and full of mercy. It is a constant and reliable force, not dependent on human merit or circumstances, but rooted in God's own nature.

Verse 12 says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance.” Why are they blessed? Because they are under the care of a God whose love does not change. A God who is faithful in all His works (v. 4). What He promises, He will do. He is never late. He never forgets. Even when we are weak, distracted, or struggling, He is always working. He is ever good.

But God’s steadfast love is not only consistent—it is also powerful, because it is backed by His sovereignty. He is the Creator who, by His Word, made the heavens and the earth (v. 6). He simply spoke, and all things came into being and His purposes stand firm forever (v. 11). He is so exalted that He looks down from heaven and sees all the children of man (v. 13–15). He is not like kings who rely on mighty armies or strong horses to win battles (v. 16). He is mighty—and yet merciful.

When we say God’s love is “steadfast,” we are saying He is both good and able. A human may say, “I love you and will give you everything,” but be limited by circumstance. God is not like man. His love is accompanied by infinite power, and His promises are never empty.

And here is the good news: Jesus Christ is the embodiment of that steadfast love. In Him, the Word became flesh. In Him, the love of God was made visible—constant, sacrificial, strong, and saving. When we look to Jesus, we see the "hesed" of God fully revealed—a love that compels Him to go up the cross to save us and is powerful enough to conquer death for us.

Even when we fall short of the mark by giving in to sin, the steadfast love of Christ never ceases. He is faithful at such times to discipline and correct us (Hebrews 12:6). In His loyal love and compassion, He brings us to repentance and confession (Romans 2:4). When we repent and confess He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness (1 John 1:9). Even “if we are faithless, He remains faithful.” (2 Tim 2:13)

Dear brothers and sisters, take heart today. Your reason to sing is not your circumstances, but the steadfast love of the Lord. Rejoice in the God whose love never wavers and whose power never fails. Look to Jesus, for He is the living proof that God's love will never let you go.

Prayer:

Dear Father, Thank You for Your steadfast love that never fails and never ends. Thank You for Jesus, the visible expression of that love—who died for us, rose for us, and lives to intercede for us. Help us to trust in Your faithfulness and rest in Your power, even when our hearts grow weary. Teach us to sing with joy, not because of our circumstances, but because of Your unchanging goodness. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
