How do you sing in grief?

David did. In a time of overwhelming distress, when trouble had worn him down both body and soul, David did not remain silent—he sang. His song, Psalm 31, was no cheerful tune; it was a cry from the depths, a confession of weakness and an act of surrender. Emotionally depleted and physically spent, David turned not inward, but upward.

David cried out for refuge, for deliverance, for rescue, for guidance. He knew he could not save himself. And so he placed his life into the only hands capable of delivery him: God’s hands. He declared, “You are my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me.” He rested in God’s steadfast love, confident that God’s protection would surround him and understood that God was entirely in control.

David’s response to hardship was worship—because he chose to trust in God rather than in idols or false securities. He could sing in sorrow because he had hope, and he had hope because he knew who God was.

Centuries later, Jesus, in the darkest hour of suffering on the cross, would echo David’s words: “Into your hand I commit my spirit.” With those words, Jesus showed ultimate trust in the Father—not because He would be spared from death, but because He would be delivered through it in resurrection.

So what about us?

Maybe you are walking through relational heartbreak. Maybe the weight of school, work, or family responsibilities feels too much to bear. Maybe you are caught in a cycle you cannot escape, or facing a situation too complex to fix. But, you do not have to have to fix it all nor carry it all. God is your rock, your refuge, your fortress. In Him there is safety, there is healing. In Him, even your darkest night can end in a song of trust.

Lift your eyes to the One who holds your life in His hands. Like David, like Jesus, you can entrust yourself fully to Him—and find that He is enough.

Prayer:

Dear Father, when I am weary and overwhelmed, teach me to turn to You. You are my rock and my refuge, my strong and steady fortress. Help me to entrust my life into Your loving hands. Thank You that Your steadfast love never fails. Help me to sing through the storm with a heart, soul, mind, and strength fully anchored in You. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
