This is a psalm of Asaph. He calls God to make His judgment against the judges who walk unrighteously and to exercise His divine and just judgment in the world.

In verses 1-2, the picture painted for us is that of God summoning these judges to His throne to hold them accountable for being unrighteous and favouring the wicked.

Today, it is becoming increasingly hard to discern whether a judgment is fair and just or if any favouritism is shown. There is no clear consensus on a common moral standard to guide us, and those making the judgments can rationalize their judgment. Political correctness can cause fear of speaking up, and favouritism can subtly influence decisions and judgments in today’s societal and judicial establishments.

Thus, people can do as they like without the voice of absolutes or the voice of sound opinions without fear of being accused of being judgmental or critical. This has caused Christians to become afraid to confront sins in the church.

In verses 3-4, God commands the unjust judges to show justice and act justly, especially towards the weak and the orphans. They must uphold the rights of the afflicted and destitute when they have the power and authority to do so.

In Micah 6:8, the prophet Micah tells us God’s desires for us. He said, “What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” God desires that we act justly by showing justice to those unable to speak up for themselves. Those who have the ability and authority must speak up for them and deliver them from being treated unjustly. Do not be like those who remain quiet or make excuses for the wrongdoers or take videos to post on social media instead of helping or calling for help.

In verse 5, God charges these judges who were blind in their ways. They lack knowledge and understanding. Thus, their decisions and actions shock the world. The world is even more shocked when they learnt that they were believers.

Today, it is not the lack of knowledge or understanding, but an overload of it on social media. The lack of discernment and moral standards caused many people to walk blindly. Even those who had taken their marriage vows before God and man are divorcing their spouses freely without fear. They are shocking the world with their decisions and actions.

In the modern world we live in today, we have also become immune to such shock, because we have seen and heard too many of them. The Bible says that we are living in the last days, where men are lovers of themselves more than of God. As believers, we must love God, not ourselves! As the psalmist said in verses 6-7, the sons of the Most High are living as though they are not His children. They will be judged like everyone else, whether they are rich or poor, as the psalmist appeals to God to arise and judge the earth in verse 8.

Prayer:

O Lord, the God of compassion and One who is just, Your glory and honor be fulfilled on earth as You sit on the throne in heaven. Let those who do not know You, walk and act justly. Let those who walk unjustly turn to You. May you save us all, the weak and strong, so we may all walk justly in Your sight.
