My Way

These are the lyrics from the well-known song “My Way”:
“And now, the end is near,
And so I face the final curtain, my friend.
I’ll say it clear,
I’ve lived a life that’s full.
I’ve travelled each and every highway,
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.”
“My Way” was a popular song in the 1970s. Many famous singers performed it, including Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, and Glen Campbell, but the most iconic version was by Frank Sinatra in 1969. Its lyrics celebrate a life lived on one’s own terms, emphasizing personal freedom, self-determination, and living without regrets. The song resonates with those who value independence and self-expression.
I have a friend who considers this song his life's theme song, a song that reflects and guides his journey. He often sings it at karaoke or whenever invited.
But in contrast, Psalm 81:13 reminds us: “Not your way, but My way.”
Where the world celebrates doing life your way, God calls us to surrender our plans, ambitions, and desires to Him. True fulfilment, blessing, and peace are found not in following our own understanding, but in trusting His wisdom and walking in His way. Psalm 81:10-16 shows that when we obey God, He provides for us, protects us from harm, delivers us from enemies, and satisfies our deepest needs. His way is higher, better, and deeply fulfilling, bringing spiritual abundance and eternal significance that our own way cannot.
Following God may not always align with our natural desires, but it leads to lasting joy, peace, and a life that truly counts for His glory.
Reflection
Are you living primarily by your own terms, or are you seeking God’s way in every decision?
What areas of your life need to shift from “my way” to “God’s way”?
Let us remember living boldly is good, but living faithfully according to God’s plan is eternal (Psalm 81:13-16).
Prayer
Lord, help us to walk in Your ways, not our own. Guide our steps, grant us Your peace, and let our lives glorify You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
