Protected Before I Knew It

Looking back on my childhood, I came to Christ when I was still in primary school. Reflecting on it now, I see this was truly God's grace. I was a very mischievous child, and my mother often struggled to keep me under control. After school, I would frequently disappear without a trace, only returning home when I was hungry. Often, my father had to take his cane and search for me at the nearby playground. I used to spend my time wandering around the neighbourhood, hanging out with the other local children.
In fact, if not for the patient teaching and “lecturing” of my Christian aunt during the school holidays, I could have easily gone astray. I recall many times when God intervened to shelter me from harm.
I kept a picture of Jesus that she gave me in my school bag, and she told me that I could pray even in the toilet. Although this advice might seem strange, it helped me at that time to turn back to God whenever I felt lost or faced difficulties.
I also remember some of our neighbourhood boys who joined gangs or quit school and ended up lost in life. Seeing their paths reminds me just how real and necessary God’s protection was in my life.
Looking back, my childhood reminds me of the truth of Psalm 124: God’s hand was upon me, keeping me safe from harm, just as He promises to protect all who trust in Him. He guided me back to Him and allowed me to grow up in His grace.
Psalm 124 reminds us that God is our constant protector. Just as He kept me safe as a child, He watches over each of us today. When we face danger, uncertainty, or temptation, we can trust that God’s hand is guiding, shielding, and delivering us from harm.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for protecting us. Help us to trust you more, to turn to you in every difficulty, and to rely on your guidance and shelter. May we always remember that our protection and hope come from you alone. In Jesus' name, Amen.
