This week I visited two brothers who were hospitalized with declining health. Their kidneys were failing, requiring dialysis. At first, my heart was heavy, and I was unsure how to comfort them. Yet to my surprise, their spirits were far better than I had expected. Throughout our conversations, there was no trace of complaint or resentment. Despite their physical limitations, they were making plans for the future and maintaining faith in the Lord. This deeply encouraged me and reminded me that those who trust in God can possess hope even in adversity.

Psalm 91 opens with the psalmist's declaration of trust and commitment to God. He acknowledges God as the Most High and makes Him his dwelling place. This is not mere lip service but a life rooted in God, wholly dependent on Him. When we, like the psalmist, fix our hearts on God, we find peace and strength in adversity.

The psalmist also describes God's protection. Life presents many dangers and challenges, yet God promises to shield those who trust in Him. He is our refuge, fortress, and shield, true security comes from God, not our own abilities or circumstances. For those dwelling in God's presence, no fear, plague, or disaster can overcome us. God's faithfulness far surpasses human capacity, and we can rest assured in leaning on Him.

Finally, God bestows further blessings upon those who trust Him. He sends angels to watch over us, sustains us in adversity, and grants salvation, peace, and hope. When we make the Most High our dwelling place, we fully experience His shelter and grace.

Reflection

This psalm calls us to dwell daily in God's presence, entrusting our fears, challenges, and uncertainties to Him. As I witnessed in the hospital ward, even with physical limitations, those who trust in God can embrace hope. May we, like the psalmist, boldly declare our faith and rest in the shelter of the Most High.

Prayer

Dear Father, help me dwell in You, trust in Your protection, and walk through trials with Your grace. Teach me to rely wholly on You, my refuge, fortress, and salvation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
