Psalm 97 is a song of praise. It is entitled “The Lord Reigns” and stresses God as the sovereign King who protects the righteous and judges the wicked, the reason for His worshippers to rejoice in Him.

In verses 1-5, the psalmist calls all the worshippers to rejoice with him as the Lord our God sits on His throne ruling over the world. His rule is just and fair. A picture is painted for us by using nature to illustrate how creation submits to the Lord who rules over it. The point illustrated is the reason why we should rejoice – our God is the Creator who controls all things in this world.

When people have a good government or a king ruling them, it is a cause for them to be happy. However, if the government is corrupt and the king is wicked, they can only be miserable. Therefore, if the good and righteous God is ruling over us, we can be certain that we will enjoy peace and justice with Him to rule over us. A good reason for us to rejoice.

In verses 6-9, the psalmist said that even the heavens proclaim the righteousness of God, as people see His glory displayed across the whole creation. They would worship and submit to Him. But the idol worshippers will be put to shame as even their worthless “gods” are told to worship the God of creation. But the worshippers of God are rejoicing because they have a God who judges their enemies, those who rejected the God who is exalted above all gods.

And when you have such a government or king ruling over you, the resources will also be used carefully and conserved well instead of being abused or turned into profits for themselves. Climate change and natural disasters are often attributed to poor governance and corrupt leadership. The governing bodies in positions of power and leadership will line their pockets at the expense of the country and its people, using these resources for their own gains. The psalmist said that those who worship God will be happy when God judges those who use riches in these ways.

In verses 10-12, the psalmist tells those who love the Lord to hate evil. They should live for God who will preserve and deliver them from the wicked. The righteous are given the wisdom and knowledge to do what is right and reap its benefits. They rejoice and do not face the punishment and judgment of God. Thus, the righteous should rejoice and give thanks to the Lord our God.

The psalmist calls the worshippers to rejoice because God is reigning as King. He will preserve and deliver His saints. They are to rejoice just as Paul tells the Philippians to rejoice in the Lord because they have been saved from their sins. and their names are written in the Book of Life. This is the reason for us to rejoice and give thanks to the Lord.

Good kings and good judges make our lives peaceful and good. It is easier and more bearable for us living in a world that is corrupted by sin. Those who desire to be treated fairly and justly must treat others in the same way. Then everyone can rejoice and not suffer.

Prayer:

O Lord, you are my Lord and King. In you, I can find refuge and strength. You are my hope and joy; in you, I lack nothing. For you rule and protect those who fear you. I rejoice in you as my Ruler and King.
