Trials in Life

Psalm is called a shiggaion written by David. A shiggaion is a poem composed under strong emotional influence. Besides Psalm 7, it also appears in the beginning of Habakkuk 3:1. The content of the Psalm (especially verses 1-6) provides some hints as to the reason it is called a shiggaion. David probably pens this Psalm after what Cush, the Benjamite has accused or slandered him. There is no clear record else in the narratives like 1 or 2 Samuel concerning the appearance of the same person Cush again and what Cush did to David. But commentators have agreed that the words of David in this Psalm indicate that Cush is one enemy of David who had caused significant trouble to David which triggered such intense emotions within him. Cush could have accused David of doing evil to his friends or bringing down his enemies in an unfair manner (v4). As a man after God’s own heart, David cried out to God for being helpless against such pursuers (v1) in his life and the fury of these enemies (v6).
In verses 7-13, David turned from his despairing circumstances and chose to focus on God in mitigating the dilemma that he was in. He reminded himself about God being a righteous judge (twice in v8 and once in v11). As in some of his other Psalms he writes such as in Ps 32:1-2, 5, David’s reverential fear of God compels him to live a life of integrity (v8). He is confident that God who is just, holds him accountable for living righteously before Him.
In verses 14-16, David writes about the works and punishment of those who are wicked and who rebels against God. Then David concludes this entire Psalm in verse 17 by praising God for His righteousness despite the despairing circumstances that he is experiencing.
Prayer
Father, I thank You that You are a righteous Judge who sees and knows all. Dear God, please help me to trust You when I feel wronged or misunderstood. Please search my heart and guide me in Your righteousness. Please teach me to wait on You, to praise You in the storm, and to walk in integrity. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
