Jehovah Nissi

Psalm 60 is the seventh and final psalm in the series of Psalms 54–60, which talks about the different specific enemies that King David faces. Here, David’s foes are from distant lands—particularly Edom (verses 9–12). The psalm opens with David lamenting that God seems to have abandoned His people. Yet almost immediately, he calls upon God to save them from their enemies.
God’s anger had allowed their enemies to tear the land apart. This was not merely human aggression—it was God’s discipline and wrath upon His people. Yet in verse 4, hope breaks through: “But for those who fear You, You have raised a banner.” This banner is not just a rallying flag—it represents God Himself, the One who fights for His people. He is Jehovah Nissi, “The LORD is my Banner” (Exodus 17:15). God Himself was their banner.
David remembers God’s past deliverance (verses 6–8) and clings to the truth that only God can give victory, even when it feels as though God has turned away.
What battles are you facing right now? Do you feel as if you are fighting alone? Remember—God is sovereign over every struggle and every triumph. He permits each battle and secures every victory. He rules and He reigns, and He knows exactly what He is doing.
A banner in battle reassures the army that they are still standing strong. Our God is a banner that never falls, never fades, never fails. We can always run to Him for help. The God who delivered His people in the past will deliver His people today and tomorrow—because He is faithful, the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Even in your valleys, even in your losses, look up—you will see His banner still raised. He is Jehovah Nissi, your Banner in defeats and in victories, in sorrows and in joys. Trust Him, and take courage under His unfailing banner.
Prayer:
Dear God, you are Jehovah Nissi, my Banner, thank You that You are my refuge and my strength. When the battles of life surround me, help me to lift my eyes to you. Remind me that I am never fighting alone, for You go before me, and You are with me. As You have been faithful in the past, so You will be faithful today and forevermore. I rest under Your covering. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
