Psalm 43 may be only five verses long, but it powerfully reveals the psalmist’s leap of faith in God. This psalm expresses the sorrow and lament of someone facing injustice and oppression. The anguish within leads him to question God. On one hand, he believes that God is his source of strength—he knows the One he believes in. On the other hand, when confronted with suffering, he questions why this faithful God does not rescue him: “God, are you really with me?”

Perhaps this is a situation we can all relate to. It reminds me of my friend’s testimony. He shared how, in both his life and work, he strives to interact with others according to the teachings of God’s truth. Yet, in return, he often receives indifference and coldness from others. This left him discouraged, his heart tormented, and he began to doubt whether he should continue obeying God’s Word.

In his suffering, he questioned his own heart: “God, where are you?” But as he sought God, a new perspective emerged. Even when we live by God’s Word, we may still be misunderstood, mistreated, or hurt by others. And perhaps, at times, we too may unintentionally hurt others. This perspective helped my friend, like the psalmist, realise that in a world filled with ungodliness, no one can rely on their own strength to be perfect.

However, when he shifted his gaze from his circumstances and himself to God, he realised there was no need to fear those who wrong him or situations filled with deceit. For God is the true light that drives out darkness. God’s faithfulness promises that He will never abandon us. He is a God who is always with us. As Proverbs says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23). When the psalmist refocused his heart, he began to take action—drawing near to the God who gives joy and life—and he praised God as “my God.”

May we also lift our hearts to God. He will surely be our strength and help through every suffering.

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for being the Lord who gives life. Though we may face many situations where we are misunderstood, we will continue to rely on You. Help us to constantly meditate on Your Word, and may Your truth guide our hearts so that we may live lives full of joy. In Jesus Christ’s name we pray, Amen!
