My Hope is in You

Psalm 39 offers a realistic and profound reflection on life. The psalmist acknowledges that life is full of difficulties and pain, and sometimes we must endure suffering quietly. In those moments, our only option is to cry out to God for mercy. Life itself is fragile and fleeting, like a breath passing quickly (v. 5).
As the psalmist observes, many people chase after wealth and achievements, but these pursuits are ultimately empty and meaningless in God’s eyes. Without God, life can feel hopeless and without purpose. Yet, even amid disappointment and despair, the psalmist confidently declares, “Lord, my hope is in you” (v. 7).
Turning to God, he confesses his sins and recognizes that God’s discipline, though painful, is an expression of love meant to bring correction and renewal. Humbly, he acknowledges that life on earth is temporary, and we are merely sojourners passing through (v. 12).
In closing, the psalmist pleads with God not to overlook his tears and asks for strength to complete the mission God has given him before his time runs out (v. 13).
This reminds us of Jim Elliot, a young man who gave his life fully to God. In the 1950s, Jim went to Ecuador to share the good news of Jesus with a remote tribe who had never heard the gospel.
Before he left, Jim thought deeply about life and death. He once wrote:
“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”
Jim knew that life on earth doesn’t last, but life with God is forever. At age 28, he was killed by the very people he came to serve. Yet, his story still inspires many Christians today. Like the psalmist, Jim believed that true hope is only found in God.
Without God, life is truly meaningless. Psalm 39 points us to the only sure hope - God Himself. With God, every step we take in life gains purpose and significance. One day, each of us will walk the road of no return (v. 13). Before that day comes, we must root ourselves firmly in God’s truth, draw near to him daily, and prepare to meet our maker with joy.
Prayer :
Dear father, please teach us to number our days wisely, so that we do not waste time chasing things that do not last. You are our only true hope. Strengthen us to fulfil the mission you have entrusted to us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
