Messianic Psalms are Psalms in the Old Testament that are interpreted as containing prophecies or allusions to Jesus Christ, the Messiah. How would these Messianic Psalms such as Psalm 22 can have impact in our life and faith in God? As the four following references in Ps 22 are either quoted by Matthew and Jesus as well other writers in other NT books, these references prophesized events that were going to happen in their future and they are being fulfilled one by one during the church age.

First, Matt 27:35 fulfils the prophecy in Ps 22:18 by how the Roman guards divided Jesus’ garments by casting lots after they had crucified Him.

Second, Matt 27:39 fulfils the prophecy in Ps 22:7 by how the people wagged their heads and mocked Jesus as they passed by.

Third, Matt 27:43 fulfils the prophecy in Ps 22:8 by how the religious leaders mocked Jesus by saying that since Jesus trusted in God and God delighted in Jesus, let God rescue and deliver Jesus.

Fourth, Matt 27:46 fulfils the prophecy in Ps 22:1 by Jesus’ cry to God before His final breath, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

There are over three hundred prophecies made of Jesus in the Old Testament. Prophecies such as His place of birth, how He would die, His rejection by the nation of Israel, and so on. All these prophecies were made hundreds of years before Jesus ever came to earth. And they are being fulfilled one by one since them.

Dear brothers and sisters, let us not take the word of God for granted. We are also blessed in having access to numerous versions (including electronic format) and many biblical resources as well.

PRAYER

Dear God, please help me to zealously guard my spiritual discipline of reading your word daily. Even though I may miss my daily devotion on certain day(s), I want to get back to Your Word again. 2 Tim 3:16-17 says, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
