Psalm 19 is a beautiful and powerful psalm. We may not fully understand every word of it, but we can all appreciate its poetic language, elegant tone, and deep spiritual meaning. This psalm praises the way God reveals himself, first through his creation, and then through his word.

The first part (vv. 1–6) paints a magnificent picture, declaring the glory of God. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky proclaims his handiwork. Though they are speechless, their message goes out day and night. The immensity of creation inspires awe in us and reminds us of our own insignificance.

In the second part (vv. 7–11), the psalmist turns to an even more precious revelation, God’s Word. His Word is more desirable than gold and sweeter than honey. It revives the soul, gives wisdom, and brings joy. God not only reveals himself through creation, but also speaks to us personally through his word, guiding us with truth and grace.

Finally, in the third part (vv. 12–14), the psalmist is deeply moved by God’s creation and truth, and he responds with humility. He recognizes his own sins and hidden failings and prays to God for forgiveness and protection. Though he feels small and unworthy, he places his trust in God’s mercy and grace.

It is truly amazing that the God who created the galaxies knows us, forgives us, and cherishes us. The psalmist ends with a prayer that should also be our daily prayer:

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14, ESV)

When was the last time you paused to see God's glory in creation, or heard His voice in His Word?

Prayer:

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
