Drawn by the Living Word

The psalmist describes God’s Word as wonderful (v.129) and full of light (v.130). In verse 131, we see his deep amazement and longing for God’s Word, his mouth is open, he pants eagerly, and he intensely desires God’s commands.
However, in verses 132–135, we notice a shift. The psalmist realizes that ultimately it is God Himself who draws him to His Word and fulfils His promises within him. God’s Word, whether described as statutes, commandments, promises, instructions, precepts, or law; reveals the living voice of God.
We must remember that understanding God’s Word does not come from our own effort or wisdom. It is God’s grace at work within us. It is God speaking through His Word, and it is His Spirit who gives us insight and remembrance.
As Jesus said in John 14:26:
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
Finally, in verse 136, the psalmist’s heart is filled with compassion and sorrow for those who disregard God’s law. This shows that God’s Word is not only rational but profoundly spiritual, it shapes our hearts so that we can empathize with God’s feelings. When His Word moves us, we begin to care for others as He does.
May we, like the psalmist, long for God’s Word while humbly relying on the Holy Spirit to teach, guide, and enlighten us. May God’s Word soften our hearts, so that we not only understand His truth but also feel His compassion for those who do not yet know Him.
Prayer
Lord, Your Word is wonderful and true. Teach us to love Your Word deeply and rely on Your Holy Spirit to understand it. May Your Word shape our hearts and fill us with compassion for others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
