Psalm 117 is the shortest psalm and the shortest chapter in the Bible. In the original Hebrew language, it contains only seventeen words. Yet, in its brevity, it speaks with remarkable depth about who God is.

This psalm begins with a call: “Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol him, all peoples!” (verse 1). All peoples, from every tribe and tongue, are invited to lift their voices in worship. Why? Verse 2 gives us the reason: “For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.”

Here we see two divine characteristics—God’s steadfast love and His enduring faithfulness—rooted in His covenant promises to Israel. But, if the call to worship is for all nations and all peoples, then God’s covenant love is not limited to Israel alone. Already in the Old Testament, we glimpse God’s heart for the Gentiles, showing that He is not only God of the Jews, but God of the whole world.

In Christ, this truth becomes even clearer. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, God has sealed a new covenant. A covenant not only with one nation, but with all who believe. In Christ, we see perfect love and perfect faithfulness. Christ did not die for those who already loved Him, but for all, that through Him every nation might have access to the Father.

This psalm reminds us that God’s steadfast love and faithfulness are not fragile or fleeting. They do not waver when people turn away, nor do they diminish when people reject Him. His love endures forever, and His faithfulness remains unbroken.

May this truth overwhelm us and lead us into deeper worship. And may it also move us outward, to share the good news of Jesus Christ so that more voices across the world may join in the eternal song of praise to our loving and faithful God.

Prayer:

Dear Father, thank you for Your steadfast love and Your faithfulness that never ends. Thank You for sending Jesus Christ, who opened the way for all nations to know You and worship You. May our voices, together with people from every nation, rise to praise and glorify Your name forever. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
