God remembers, but I forget

Psalm 105 is a beautiful song of thanksgiving and praise to the Lord. The psalmist invites us to lift our voices in worship, to proclaim His name, and to make His glory known among the nations. He reminds us that seeking the Lord continually means learning to remember His wondrous works, His miracles, and His mighty acts in our lives.
To help us do that, the psalm looks back on God’s faithfulness and redemption in Israel’s story.
Verses 8–15 take us back to the very beginnings of Israel as God’s chosen people. The Lord made a covenant with Abraham, promising that his descendants would inherit the land of Canaan. Even though they were just a small group of wandering nomads, God protected them wherever they went. He preserved them from harm, provided for their needs, and allowed them to flourish despite their vulnerability.
Verses 16–23 tell the story of Joseph. His life was filled with unexpected twists and turns, betrayal, slavery, false accusation, and imprisonment. Yet, behind it all, God was shaping Joseph for something greater. In His time, the Lord raised Joseph up to stand beside Pharaoh and to become the instrument of saving many lives. What others meant for evil, God used for good.
Verses 24–41 remind us of God’s mighty hand in leading His people out of Egypt. Their freedom was not the result of chance or human strategy, it was the Lord Himself who brought them out. Through Pharaoh’s hardness of heart, the ten plagues, and the miraculous parting of the sea, God displayed His power. And even in the wilderness, He did not abandon them: He gave bread from heaven and water from the rock. God’s presence and might never left them, even when they failed to trust God and constantly desired to return back to Egypt.
From God’s covenant with Abraham to Israel finally entering the promised land, almost 470 years (430 years sojourning and 40 years in the wilderness) passed. That is a long time to wait. Yet God never forgot His promise. As verse 8 reminds us: “He remembers his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations.” His faithfulness never wavered.
This psalm reminds us of a sobering truth: God remembers, but I forget. I forget His goodness in times of stress. I forget His promises when answers seem slow in coming. I forget His presence when fear clouds my vision. But when I pause to look back, I begin to see how faithfully His hand has been guiding me all along. Even the difficult seasons can become testimonies of His guidance and grace.
One practice that has helped me is to look back and recount significant milestones in my life. To look into moments when God answered prayer, opened doors, or carried me through struggles. Writing them down or sharing them with others reminds me of His faithfulness, strengthens my trust, and gives me new reasons to praise Him. These recollections also become stories of encouragement I can pass on to others, pointing them to how great our God is. Through this process of recounting, it brings renewed joy knowing the the Lord is sovereign and is worthy of all glory and honours.
Prayer:
Faithful God, thank You that You remember even when I forget. We thank You for remembering Your covenant and for showing us Your steadfast love through all generations. Teach us to daily recall Your wondrous works, to give thanks in every circumstance, and to trust Your timing even when the wait feels long. May our lives become living testimonies of Your goodness, bringing glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
